ITECH 240 – New Media Projects

Weekly Team Assignments – complete unique tasks, Teams will present their progress each class.


Course Description:

This course is an overview and utilization of emerging technologies currently used in most industries. Students will apply their current digital media skills to design and develop a new media prototype. The hands-on use of web applications, digital static/time-based media, interactive media, 2D/3D animation, 3D modeling, and immersive realties will be utilized. Students will collaborate within the design thinking framework and studio environment with a local area business to design a rapid prototype serving real world expectations.

Through a series of class tutorials and discussions, students learn how industry-standard tools and practices are applied to real world projects. Final projects may serve diverse industries such as commercial, scientific, educational, non-profit, entertainment and/or community-based needs.

Week 1 – Students Present Current WordPress e-portfolios

WEEK 2
Research and Data Collection (2-3 wks)

Client Introduction – TBA – proposals presented

Students present weekly progress.

Week 2-3 Tasks
User Experience Data Retrieval and Design Thinking Observations, Digital Media capturing assessed and scheduled (VR), 3D models designed or retrieve existing models.


WEEK 3 – DEFINE

Design, Development and Collection of Assets (3-4 wks)


Week 2-4 Tasks
Presentation to Client with Research, Data, Specs and Production Timeline.
Assessment of Needed Production Assets (access, photos, docs, copy, media)


WEEK 4 – Pre-production – Narrative and Storyboards (4-5 wks)

Students present weekly progress.

Wireframes, sitemaps, copy and design timeline layout (UNITY and BLENDER) and UX/UI specifications for APP Development.


WEEK 5 IDEATE

Critique and Assessment of Production Specs, Storyboards and Designs (5-6 wks)

Client review, critique, editorial feedback and approval.


WEEK 6-7 – Time-based Media Production Specs (Adobe CS, 2D/3D Animation) (6-9 wks)

Students present weekly progress.

Design and development for time-based media in Blender and UNITY. Based on storyboards and wireframe scenes.


WEEK 8 – Midterm Evaluation – Students present digital media design thinking ideations (1-8 wks)

Student Oral Presentations

Class Presentation of mockups, for UX/UI 2D design for App and ROUGH CUTS for time-based media along with 3D models/scenes in Blender and UNITY.


WEEK 9 – PROTOTYPE

Wireframes and Storyboards Lock Down (8-9 wks)

Client reviews the revised Midterm presentations. Client offers editorial and design feedback with students. Revision discussed.

Pre-production completed (Week 1-5) and Production timeline (Week 5-11), Post-production (Week 11-14) is charted based on critique. Client approves to move forward.


WEEK 10 – Design and Development of Mobile Application (9-13 wks)

APP 2D Design Team begins the mockup of APP designs utilizing ADOBE XD. Game level designers continue to edit BLENDER, UNITY, along with VR media captured and edited within UNITY.


WEEK 11 – UX and UI Review and Critique (10-13 wks)

WEEK 12 – XD, Code and Interactive Dynamic Assets (11-13 wks)

Import of VR time-based media into UNITY. Professional VR expert will mentor and offer best practices to students.


WEEK 12 – Time-based and Interactive Prototype Iterations (12-14 wks)

***Client (Zoom) and Students Present

Presentation of XD, PPT, WP, video/animation, rendered 3D models or digital illustrations. Client for feedback and revisions.


WEEK 13 – TEST

Testing, testing, AND testing! (13-14 wks)

Students will cross-test, trouble-shoot and build iterations for options.

Both 2D APP and UNITY/VR modules.


WEEK 14 – IMPLEMENT (Present Final Prototype to Client)

Last Fixes and Prepare for Case Study Presentation (14 wk)

VR Mentor assists in troubleshooting UNITY and VR interactivity. Test of rapid prototyping for 2D APP navigational flow for users. Revisions discussed.
